                                                                        Procedure
I.Introduction
1. Greeting
T. Slide #1.  The topic of today’s lesson is “Science”.
2. Aim of the lesson
T. During the lesson you will
                                      - to learn what is Science
                                      - to review Past Passive
                                      - to learn about science in Ukraine and some Ukrainian scientists
T. Slide #2. In the words of Karl Popper, "Science is a history of corrected mistakes", and even Albert Einstein remarked of himself "That fellow Einstein . . . every year retracts what he wrote the year before". (more definitions of science, technologies, natural world, science)
T. Slide # 3. A Gentle Genius Albert Einstein said: “Science is a powerful instrument. How it is used depends on man himself, not on the instrument. A knife is useful for the lives of people, but it can be also used to kill.”
II.Warming up
T. New inventions are appearing every day and make our life easier, longer, warmer,….
Slide # 4 . Your task is to look at the table and make up sentences about inventors and their inventions:

                                                                           Make up Sentences

III.Main part of the lesson:
1.       Vocabulary
T. There are a lot of branches of science. Do you know some of them?
P. biology, physics, music, etc.
T. Slide # 5. Look at the table . Match the sciences with their definitions.
¨  Chemistry     a) science about the earth
q  Biology          b) science about the structure of
q  Physics               substances
q  Botany           c) science about plants and
q  Geology             their structure
                                       d) science about the life of plants
                                            and animals
                                      e) science about matter and
                                           energy as heat, light, sound…
T. Slide # 6. Do you know how we call a person who is an expert in the studies?

2.       Grammar
T. On the previous lessons we have spoken about Past Passive.
Slide # 8. Tell me please, how do we form Past Passive?
¨  Form:
¨  Positive     was/were + Past Participle
¨  Negative    wasn’t/weren’t + Past Participle
¨  Questions   was/were + subject + Past Participle…?
T. Slide # 9. Tell me please, how do we use Past Passive?
¨  Use:
¨  To focus on what we are talking about
¨  When we don’t know the doer
¨  When it is understood who did the actions
¨  We can use by + person or thing if we wish to say who or what does the action
3.       Writing
T.  Slide # 10. Open your copy- books, write the date of today. Your task is to write sentences using the Past Passive of the verbs in brackets.
¨  The first plastic (make)…in 1855 in England.
¨  Penicillin (discover)…by Alexander Fleming.
¨  The dishwasher (design)…by Mrs.W.A.Cockran.
¨  “The Origin of Species” (write)…by Charles Darwin.
¨  The helicopter (invent)…by Igor Sikorskyi in 1939.
T. Now you will have individual work.
Slide # 11. Use the verbs from the box and match each invention with their inventor

Make, discover, design, create, invent
The first flight
By Columbus
America
By Karl Benz
The first popular car
By the Japanese company Sony
Lego building bricks
By the Wright brothers
The first Walkman and portable disc player
By the Christiansen family in Denmark

IV.Checking  the  homework
T. Your home task was to read the text “Science” Ex.1p.84 - 85 and complete the sentences from  Ex.2p.85
Group #1 had to write questions.
Slide # 12. P1, P2, P3,etc
¨  Is science important for most people living in the modern world?
¨  Is science important for world peace?
¨  Does science help to solve the energy problems?
¨  What can scientists predict?
¨  Is science closely connected with human biology?
¨  Can you feel a great effect of modern technology on our lives?
Slide # 13. P1, P2, P3, etc. Complete the sentences
¨  Science is important for…
¨  Research has improved…
¨  Scientists have analysed…
¨  The study of science provides people with…
¨  The study of the natural world may help…
¨  We can feel a great affect of…
¨  The business world is constantly changing and the result of it is…
T. Speak about the science. P1, P2, P3.
While speaking about science we couldn’t speak about science in Ukraine. We are Ukrainians and we have to know our history and science too. What do you know about science in Ukraine?
P1, P2, P3, etc.
T. Slide # 14. Ukraine has given a lot of scientist to the world

¨  O.Stasiv      etc.
T. You know some interesting facts about some Western Ukrainian physical inventors

 Slide # 15, 16,  17, 18
Ostap Stasiv
(1903 – 1985)
He began a new trend in physics study of kinetic parameters of defects.  He founded in Berlin the Institute of Crystal Physics

                                        Oleander Smakula
                                                   (1900 – 1983)
His quantity of  mathematical Correlation is known in physics as “Smakula’s formula”
    Oleksa Bilanuk (1926 – 2005)
He proved that  there were particles which moved  quicker than light. The particles                                                                                                                                                                                                       were called “tahions”.
Heorhii Sharpak
(1924 – 2004)
He discovered a new  type of nuclear particles detector – a multiwire chamber of Sharpak
